Gold medal winner, 19th International Harp Contest in Israel (2015)
Principal Harpist, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra
Award-winning harpist Yuying Chen is the Gold Medal and 1st prize winner of the 19th International Harp Contest in Israel, and winner of the Contest’s French music category. She has also won the Lille Harp Competition in Lille, France, The Goldenharp International Harp Competition in St. Petersburg and the 4th prize at the USA International Harp Competition in 2013. She began her studies with Liduo Zhang in middle school, and later studied with Professor Jason Chang at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She received additional training from Willy Postma, Isabelle Perrin, Carrol McLaughlin, Xavier de Maistre, Jana Bouskova, Helga Stork and Elisabeth Fontan-Binoche at their masterclasses.
Yuying Chen has performed at major festivals, such as Schleswig-Holstein, and toured with Maestro Christoph Eschenbach and Ivan Fischer. She is also a champion of contemporary music, having given premieres of several major works, including Tan Dun’s The Book of Women. She has performed with the China Philharmonic, Shanghai Philharmonic, Hangzhou Philharmonic, Macau Orchestra, San Diego Symphony and Metropolitan Festival Orchestra of Singapore. In 2005, she was featured on the “Focus on Youth” program at the World Harp Congress in Dublin. Yuying is currently the Principal Harpist of the Shanghai Philharmonic.
